Feather River College student earns national Jack Kent Cooke scholarship!

May 15 - May 31

Multi-Day Event

Quincy, CA – The Jack Kent Cooke scholarship is one of the most sought after and prestigious of scholarships awarded, and this year, Feather River College (FRC) is proud to announce that one of its students has been awarded this admired scholarship. Evi de Bois, who will be graduating in spring 2024, is one of only 60 nationwide recipients to receive this honor and plans on transferring to the University of Reno, Nevada, where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree in both Science and English.

When asking Evi as to why she is choosing to double major, she commented, “I believe getting a Bachelor's degree in both Science and English allows for me to foster both my creativity and critical thinking, which are skills that are crucial in both science and writing. It is my hope to go to graduate school and do research. After that, I would love to return to Feather River College to teach and inspire others.”

Feather River College is excited for this opportunity for Evi and thrilled to have had Evi as part of its Sciences programs, English department, as well as an Associated Students of Feather River College (ASFRC) Officer, and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member. Needless to say, Evi has left her mark on FRC and the College is thrilled to see what the future holds for this bright and ambitious Golden Eagle.

Evi went on to comment and thank those who were integral parts of her time at Feather River College by stating, "I would like to wholeheartedly thank the wonderful instructors at FRC, who were all vital to my success. I'd like to especially thank Anna Thompson, Dr. Nikki Grose, and my TRiO advisor, Billy Ogle, for their unwavering support and dedicated mentorship."

FRC prides itself on fostering student success and Evi is a prime example of the College’s mission. Evi did a great job of immersing herself into the FRC culture and finding areas that allowed for personal growth that could also help benefit others, such as her roles as ASFRC Student Trustee and eventually President. Evi did a fantastic job in representing the FRC student body and all of us at Feather River College will be sad to see her go, but will remain excited for what her future beholds.

It should also be noted that out of the 60 recipients for this nationwide award, Quincy is home to two Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship recipients this year. A participant in FRC’s Upward Bound program and Quincy High School senior, Simone Smith, was also awarded this admirable scholarship. Feather River College would like to acknowledge Upward Bound Advisor, Patty Llamas, for her sponsorship and application assistance in applying for this award.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation also sent out appreciation to Dr. Thomas Heaney for his sponsorship and application submission, working with FRC students for this award. FRC appreciates all of the dedicated staff and faculty members that assist students with scholarship applications, educational guidance, and career exploration. It is because of this that students continue to make Feather River College their college of choice.
