Player Notes
The Genoa/France player represents Genoa on Turns 1-3, although Angevin activity is included in these turns too. Genoa faded as a major Italian power in the 1400s so this player is mostly France on Turns 4-6.
Milan tended to cooperate with the Holy Roman Empire during this period. Thus, the Milan/Hapsburg player is mainly Milan on Turns 1-4, but these turns include Aragonese and Imperial Italian ambitions. The player is Charles V on Turn 5, and is Spain on Turn 6.
The Internal Boxes represent the political, economic, and social struggles in the various cities. Rome's Internal box includes the Church's struggle with internal dissent, and the effects of the Avignon Papacy, Great Schism, and Reformation.
The Balkans box represents Genoese and Venetian competition for the remnants of the Byzantine Empire and their colonies in the region, such as Dalmatia and Cyprus. The box also includes the Hapsburg wars with the Turks over Hungary, the Nicopolis and Varna crusades, Papal desires to reunite the Eastern and Western churches, and the 1529 Siege of Vienna.
