Quincy, CA – 11/08/11 – In one year the Feather River College women’s soccer team went from a one win, worst in the conference, performance to a first place Golden Valley Conference championship. Winning the championship would not be easy on Tuesday afternoon. Butte College is always a tough opponent and the FRC women had lost the two previous contests this season against the defending GVC champions.
The score at the half was 0-0 with former Quincy high standout Korey Cline (above) in goal for the Lady Golden Eagles coming up with 4 first half saves to keep the Roadrunners at bay.
The second half saw the Eagles strike first, when in Gracie Pedroza combined with Melissa Kalbfleisch on a corner kick set piece which resulted in Kalbfleisch curling the ball into the top corner of the net for a 1-0 Golden Eagle lead. The lead would only last 6 minutes however when Butte broke away and knotted the match a 1-1.
Pedroza would again play the key role in the match winner in the 75th minute when FRC was awarded a free kick 25 yards from the Roadrunner goal and on a specially designed free kick Pedroza would strike a laser beam of a shot into the upper corner of the net for the eventual match winner. “I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to see our women win the conference title. We recruited so hard this season to build our women’s team back up to a conference championship level and to win it this way in only my second year at FRC is a dream come true” Said coach Don Williams. “I am so proud of our women for battling through a difficult, injury riddled season, they have shown extraordinary guts and character” Williams continued.
