Head Coach
Randy Rick

The name Randy Rick will no longer be synonymous with an "up-and-coming" tag. He shed that label during his first season at Feather River College when the 1999-2000 Golden Eagles startled the state of California by performing the greatest performance turnaround in the nation. When Coach Rick came to FRC he found a program that was in need of a basketball "facelift." Rick inherited a program that went 2-29, 3-25 and was last in the Golden Valley Conference’s crowd attendance. Rick rejuvenated the men’s program with a 25-5 overall record (9-1 in the GVC), producing two Junior College All State players in Jose Taylor and Eddie Shelby. The same year the Golden Eagles brought the Golden Valley Conference Championship trophy to FRC, a first in school’s history. Not bad for a team picked to finish dead last in the GVC!

With twenty years coaching experience at the High School, Junior College, Division II, and International professional levels, Coach Rick enters his fourth season at Feather River College. Rick has navigated FRC to three consecutive winning seasons, the first two being back-to-back, twenty-win seasons. Rick has led the Golden Eagles to 15 preseason tournaments, making it to the championship round nine times and winning six championship games. For his efforts Rick was named the 1999-2000 Golden Valley Coach of the Year. "I want Feather River College basketball to be good on a continuing basis," said Rick. "All along it has been my goal to give FRC a program that will last, one that will be worthy of postseason play every year."

The foundation of the Golden Eagle program is the electrifying, up-tempo style of play, graduation/GPA rates, and the ability to transfer student-athletes to the next level. Rick’s 62-28 overall record at FRC speaks for itself as the Golden Eagles average 90 points per game during the preseason, and 80 points per game in GVC play. Academically, the men’s overall GPA went from a 1.80 to 2.80 in one season due to FRC’s outstanding support system (study hall, free tutors, low student-to-teacher ratio, and supportive staff and administrators). "The most rewarding aspect of my job is being a part of young men’s lives, watching them mature, accumulate skills that will yield a lifetime of success as adults," explained Rick. "We’re careful to recruit young men who are good people first, and are looking for an opportunity to further themselves socially and academically," continued Rick. "It’s not what they are when they enter our educational setting, it’s what they are when they walk out our doors." The Golden Eagles graduated all four sophomores from the 2001-2002 team, with three receiving scholarships. Rickey Dominguez, a Phi Theta Kappa honoree, will be looked upon for his scoring as he enters the University of Illinois at Chicago. High flying forward 6’6" Catrel Green signed with Indiana State University, the college of legendary Larry Bird. FRC’s 6’11" Dionte Butler committed to Angelo State University.

Rick joined Feather River College after coaching at Los Molinos High School. He also coached at the International professional level in Albury, Australia before taking over as head coach of the CSU Chico freshman team. He then moved on as an assistant to legendary coach John Abell and helped Butte College win back-to-back GVC championships.

Rick played point guard at Red Bluff High School and was named First Team All NSCIF before playing at Butte Community College. There he led the nation in free throw percentage at one point, making 49 out of 50 free throws, guiding the Roadrunners to the California State Community College Tournament. Rick then attended Chico State University where he still holds the single season and career all time field goal percentage record at 62.3%. As a shooting guard he played a significant role in leading the Wildcats to a 13-1 league record, and winning the NCAC league championship. The same year Chico State beat Stanford University, making CSU-Chico the only Division II team to ever defeat a PAC-10 team. From there, Rick played professionally in Albury, Australia for two years averaging 29 points per game while averaging 91% from the free throw line.

Rick earned a BA in Physical Education from Chico State, completed the Credential program from Simpson College in Redding, California, and fulfilled his student teaching requirements at Corning High School. He has been married for 11 years to Traci Wise-Rick of Chico and had two sons, Brady (6), Jacob (3), and one daughter, Jordan (16).
