Feather River came into Saturdays match at Shasta College with a record of 1 and 0 in Golden Valley Conference play with a 98 to 89 victory on the road over Lassen College Jan. 14th.
Feather River guard Archie Kovich opened the game with a 3-pointer, and then the Knights reeled off nine straight points. The Knights were up as much as 20-9 but Feather River would relentlessly pursue Shasta's lead all game. The Golden Eagles then went on a run of their own scoring the next nine points to get back into the game with the outstanding play of 6’2” guard David Daniels. The sophomore electrified Feather River hitting ten points in a row on four consecutive baskets and a pair of free throws. Daniels also made an impact defensively diving for loose balls and providing high energy as the Golden Eagles kept the game close.
Shasta stayed ahead for the rest of the half and took a 40-33 lead into halftime after Jamie Jones drove and dished out to Cedric Pugh for a 3-pointer with four seconds left.
The second half, though, was a different tale. FRC outscored Shasta 42 to 29 as the Golden Eagles began an assault on the glass and capitalized on loose ball opportunities. The Golden Eagles dominated the glass with a 42-28 rebounding advantage, many of them coming on the offensive end late in the second half. FRC’s 6’7” forward sophomore, Donnie Kidd led the attack with seven offensive and four defensive boards along with 6’3” freshman Daryl Edge who made big time plays in crucial moments. Edge walked away with five offensive and three defensive rebounds while finishing with nine points. 6”3” Larry Howard had a spectacular offensive board and put-back late in the game that proved to be a major blow to Shasta as Howard again provided spectacular defense, while providing leadership and mental toughness for the Golden Eagles.
Mid way through the second half Archie Kovich splashed consecutive 3-pointers along with 6’1” freshman guard Jordan Cannon dissecting the Knight’s defense, making ten points down the stretch with a mixture of runners and free-throws.
Howard put Feather River up 60-58 with two foul shots with 5:44 left. Kyle Hernandez a 6’4” sophomore broke Shasta’s heart with a deep 3-pointer on the next possession and Shasta never had an answer for the athleticism of the Golden Eagles the remainder of the game as Kovich and Howard came up with a gutty loose balls that help solidify the win.
Howard finished with 12 points while Kovich had 14, Daniels 11, Edge 9 and Jordan Cannon leading all scorers with 15. Feather River hit 11 of 14 free-throws in the second half and shot 76% for the game.
