Program Guide

The following guide is for students wishing to complete the 30 unit Early Childhood Education certificate or the ECE portion of the AA degree in two years.  Students should seek an advisor in the ECE program for other options.   First Semester   ECE 057   Intro to ECE Programs/Field Experience I   3 ECE 162  Child Growth and Development  3 ECE Elective optional .5-3 General Education 6-9   Second Semester                                                          ECE 154  Creative Activities for Children 3 ECE 058  ECE Programs/Field Experience II     3-4 OR ECE 150  Observational Studies 3 ECE Elective optional .5-3 General Education 6-9   Third Semester   ECE 059  Nutrition in Infancy/Childhood 2 ECE 051 Administration of Programs for Young Children  3 OR ECE 055  Supervision: Parent/Staff Relations 3 ECE 080  Adult/Pediatric CPR and Pediatric First Aide .5 ECE 082  Child Health and Safety .5 ECE Elective optional .5-3 CWEE 453.09 optional 1-5 General Education 6-9   Fourth Semester   ECE 153 Child, Family, Community 3 ECE 058  ECE Programs/Field Experience II     3-4 OR ECE 150  Observational Studies 3 ECE Elective optional .5-3 General Education 6-9   A total of 5-6 units in electives must be taken over the two-year period. Students may select from elective offerings during any semester. ECE 058, 059 and 150 are offered every other year. They should be taken during the year offered. First Aide/CPR may be taken any semester.  See your advisor. ECE 051 and ECE 055 alternate each year. You are only required to take one for the certificate or the AA. This course should be taken in year 2. Cooperative Work Experience in ECE is recommended the third semester if you are not employed at a child development facility. A minimum of 6 units general education must be taken each semester to complete the AA in two years.
