Excel Men's Group

Whether it is through poker nights, sports teams, or trips to the barber shop, men have always found reasons to group together. Plumas Rural Services (PRS) gets to the root of this essential male need by offering an opportunity for Plumas County men to join the newly formed Excel Men’s Wellness Group. The men’s group met once a week for five weeks on Thursdays, March 24 – April 21, from 5:30-7:30pm, at PRS’ main office in Quincy (711 E. Main Street).

The purpose of the group is simple – to get men of different backgrounds and ages together to form a network of support and education in relationship to wellness. PRS sent out a survey to males in the community to see if the formation of a men’s developmental group was even something that would interest them. The response was a resounding yes. Men were interested in connecting with other men, telling their stories, learning from others and getting the support they needed to excel in life.
To dig deeper into what would make a successful men’s group, PRS held a focus group in February.  Picture of men at group meeting.

The group provided feedback on topics, structure and purpose of the proposed group. Based off the responses from the focus group, facilitators Ryan Nowling and James Wilson formulated the mission statement of the Excel Men’s Wellness Group:

The Excel Men’s Wellness Group will be conducted in a friendly and safe environment. Each of the participants in the group will have an opportunity to participate substantively and have their voices heard in order to learn from others in the group and share their experiences. Everyone in the group can help get any support they need in order to help them excel in life.
If there’s an area in your life you want to excel in, and you’d like to share some of your experience, work, challenges, and more with other men in your community with similar goals, we invite you to join us.
